Great resort with modern lift system but not a huge area, managed to do all the runs in one day.

Plenty of things to do in the town and good value food and accommodation but the place was full of Brits so maybe do what I did and stay outside and just ski the area as imagine it gets a bit noisy at night.

We visited Zell am See for a weeks holiday fairly late on in the season. Luckily the snow was still fairly good, although it was definitely getting sparse on the lower runs. You do have the option of skiing on the Kaprun glacier if the snow isn't so good, but note that it is at least a 20 minute bus ride to the gondolas at the bottom of the glacier, and then the same again up to the top. (And if the snow is bad in Zell, everyone will be doing the same thing!)

Plus points:
- Beautiful traditional Austrian town on the lake
- Some excellent accommodation choices (the full board hotels offer plenty of fine dining!)
- A good choice of runs for all levels (personal favourites: black 14, and the reds around the Sonnkogel area)
- The friendliness of the locals

Negative points:
- Snow conditions not great
- Apres ski very quiet
- Only one main gondola from the town
- Probably not suited to snowboarders (off piste is limited)

My advice would be - if you want to stay in Zell then visit earlier in the season, otherwise stay in Kaprun to give easier access to the glacier. We actually skied on the glacier 3 days out of the 6, which meant a lot of early starts. However this resort is definitely worth a visit in my book.
