We actually stayed in the nearby resort of Zell am See but the conditions on the glacier were much better due to the time of year we went. The free ski bus in Zell sets off at regular times in the morning. It's an early start to get up the slopes as it can take awhile but well worth it once you're up there.
The large bowl area had the best conditions but slightly boring after awhile. Plus there is the added issue that these are accessed by T bar lifts only, dismounting of which for me is not overly graceful! The lower slopes are best enjoyed early in the day as can get quite slushy and bumpy.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel in Zell which was stunning and the food was amazing although after a few days of fine dining I just craved a bowl of spag Bol! It had gorgeous views over the lake, the service was excellent and there was a shuttle bus to the bus station in town, which would otherwise be a 10 minute uphill walk.
Great option for a cheaper break in spring - it was lovely and warm and definitely did not require ski jackets.
