Kaltenbach is one of a number of resorts dotted along the Zillertal Valley, and offers great skiing whatever your level. There are a good mix of reds and blues, nothing too hardcore, and when you've skied everything in that section you can nip across to Hochfugen which is linked by lift and spend a day there. But what is really great about the area is that you also have Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and the Hintertux glacier just down the valley, as well as Zell am Ziller and Gerlos within easy reach. So you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to where to ski.
Kaltenbach is also an easy transfer from Innsbruck airport (1hr tops), and you can also reach the valley easily by train too. We stayed in a village slightly up the valley called Schlitters, in a fairly standard traditional small hotel - nothing fancy, but loads of charm, and run by a local family (as many hotels in Austria are). It was fairly quiet in that area, and perfect for families. If you want something a bit more lively then stay down the valley in Mayrhofen.
A great trip overall, excellent skiing in one of Austrias prime ski areas.
