We went to Soll in January 2012. Travelling independently for a four day break, we chose Soll because it's the nearest major ski area to Munich airport (1.5 hours by car). At 700 meters above sea level, we were concerned about snow cover, but needn't have worried as there was ample coverage (perhaps we were blessed with skiing during one of the best alpine seasons on record!) Despite our good luck and the abundance of snow cannons, I can't help thinking that the low altitude may result in poor coverage on occasions.
One of the best aspects of Soll is that it forms part of the large, interconnected 'Skiwelt' area. As a result, a vast amount of choice is presented upon browsing the piste map. - a great boon for more experienced skiers! Further more, it is possible to buy a lift pass which allows access not only to Skiwelt, but to other nearby ski areas, including Kitzbuhel.
After some research, I realised that, using this pass, and including a short bus ride, it may actually be possible to ski from Soll to Kitzbuhel and back in one day.
Getting the first lift of the day, and despite one navigation mishap, we managed a 30 minute stop in Kitzbuhel (just enough time to wolf down some lunch!) before heading back to Soll. I'd recommend this trip for more experienced skiers, as a real sense of achievement was felt upon returning to base. In fact, it is strange to realise how close skiwelt is to the kitzbuhel area without being physically connected by a lift. If this were to happen Austria would have an area large enough to rival the Three valleys!
The apres ski in Soll is a lively as one could wish for. The Moonlight bar at the bottom of the home run is full of beer fuelled rowdiness, as is the Hexen bar near to the gondola station. After 8pm, the night-life in Soll seemed rather more sedate, which, perhaps is no bad thing after the afternoon excess!
Overall, I would recommend Soll to skiers of all abilities. I might however, say that Soll, perhaps is not the best choice for boarders as there are a number of flattish sections scattered throughout.
With the availability of cheap flights to Munich airport, Soll is great choice for a ski holiday. I hope to be back one day.
